So, I’ve been trying to grow some avocado trees, you know, the ones that can handle a bit of cold. It’s been a journey, let me tell you. Started out pretty clueless, just a guy with a dream of homegrown guacamole, haha.
First thing I did was dig around for info on these so-called “cold-hardy” avocados. Found a few varieties that sounded promising. Ended up grabbing a couple of grafted trees from a local nursery – figured that was a good starting point, right? They looked healthy enough, with shiny leaves and all.

Planting Time
Next, I had to figure out where to plant these babies. Picked a spot in my yard that gets a good amount of sun, ’cause avocados love that sunshine. Dug a couple of holes, bigger than the pots the trees came in, and made sure the soil was loose and well-draining. Avocados hate having wet feet, apparently.
Planted them in the ground, making sure the graft union (that bumpy part on the trunk) was a few inches above the soil. Filled in the holes, gave them a good watering, and crossed my fingers.
Waiting Game
Then came the waiting. Watered them regularly, especially during dry spells, and kept an eye out for any signs of trouble. Saw a few leaves turn yellow at one point, which kinda freaked me out. Did some more digging online and figured out it might be a nutrient thing, so I got some fertilizer specifically for avocado trees.
After a while, I started seeing new growth. That was exciting! Little green shoots popping up, and the trees started looking fuller and healthier. Felt like I was finally getting the hang of this.
Protecting from the Cold
Winter was coming, so I had to think about protecting these guys from the cold. Built some makeshift shelters around them using stakes and some thick fabric I had lying around. It wasn’t pretty, but it seemed to do the trick. They made it through the winter with minimal damage.
Still Learning
It’s been a couple of years now, and my avocado trees are still going strong. They are bigger and more robust. It’s definitely been a learning experience, with some ups and downs. But there’s something really satisfying about growing your own food, even if it’s just a couple of avocados (still waiting on those, by the way!).
My avocado trees are growing well, but no fruit yet. I’ll keep waiting for the fruit. It’s all part of the adventure, I guess!
I’m no expert, that’s for sure. Just a regular dude who wanted to grow some avocados. But hey, if I can do it, anyone can, right? It just takes a bit of patience, some research, and a whole lot of love for guacamole.

- Things I’ve learned:
- Avocados need sun.
- They don’t like wet feet.
- Grafted trees might be a good idea.
- Protecting them from the cold is important.
- Patience is key!
So, that’s my avocado tree story. Hope it’s helpful to someone out there. Happy growing!
