Ah, let me tell you somethin’ about them Green Giant arborvitaes. You know, them big ol’ trees folks plant when they want some privacy or a nice hedge. Now, the thing with these trees, they grow real fast, but if you want ’em to stay healthy and strong, you gotta know when to fertilize ’em right. Ain’t no use puttin’ in all that work if you ain’t feedin’ ’em proper.
First thing you gotta remember is, best time to fertilize them Green Giants is in the spring. Why spring, you ask? Well, that’s when the trees start growin’ again after the winter. They wake up hungry, you know? So, you give ’em a little food right then, and they’ll be real happy. Get yourself some fertilizer that’s high in nitrogen. Something like that 10-5-5 mix. The numbers just mean how much of each good stuff is in there. Nitrogen helps ’em grow nice and green. You want them trees to stay full and bushy, right? Well, that’s what you need.
Now, don’t go throwin’ that fertilizer just anywhere. You gotta be smart about it. Spread about one pound of fertilizer for every 100 square feet of root area. And you know them roots ain’t just under the tree trunk, right? They spread out wide, so you gotta make sure you’re coverin’ the area around it too. Then, water it good so the food goes down to them roots where it’s needed.
But that ain’t all. Some folks say you can give ’em another round in the summer if you see ’em lookin’ like they need a little extra help. Them trees grow fast, like I said, so sometimes one feedin’ in the spring ain’t enough. Just don’t go overboard. Too much fertilizer can burn them roots, and then you’re in a heap of trouble.
Another thing to keep in mind, if you’re growin’ these Green Giants for a hedge, you might wanna “top” ’em in the early spring too. That’s just a fancy way of sayin’ cuttin’ the top off a bit. It ain’t gonna hurt ’em none, and it’ll make ’em grow wider instead of taller. So, you’ll get a thicker, fuller hedge that gives you plenty of privacy. And who doesn’t want that?
Now, after the spring growin’ season’s done, and you see them new green shoots comin’ out, it’s time to do your first prune. That’s late spring, you see? This is when, if you gotta make any big cuts to shape the tree or fix somethin’, that’s the time to do it. Don’t be scared to trim it up if it’s gettin’ a bit wild. These trees grow back real nice.
Then, come mid-fall, you can give ’em another light prune if needed. Green Giants grow all through summer and into fall, so you might see some new growth that needs a little trimmin’. But don’t do it too late in the year, or the cold might damage the new cuts.
One more thing, and this is real important – don’t go throwin’ coffee grounds around your arborvitaes. I know some folks say coffee grounds are good for the garden, but not for these trees. They don’t like acidic stuff too much, and coffee grounds can mess with ’em. So, keep that stuff away from your Green Giants if you want ’em growin’ healthy and tall.
So, just to sum it up for ya – fertilize in early spring, maybe give ’em a little extra in the summer if needed, and prune in late spring and mid-fall. Give them trees some love and they’ll grow fast and thick, givin’ you that privacy you want. Ain’t nothin’ better than watchin’ somethin’ grow strong when you take care of it right!
