Alright, listen up, y’all. Something’s been messin’ with my petunias, and I ain’t happy ’bout it. These here flowers, they’re supposed to be pretty, all full and bright, but now? Full of holes, that’s what they are. Like somethin’s been eatin’ ’em alive.
Now, I ain’t no fancy gardener, you know. I just stick ’em in the ground and hope for the best. Water ’em when they look thirsty, that’s about it. But this year, somethin’s different. These holes, they weren’t there last week, and now, they’re everywhere. Makes me wanna just yank the whole lot of ’em out.
So, I got to thinkin’, what could be causin’ this mess? First thing that popped into my head was bugs. Them little critters, they get into everything. I remember last year, somethin’ was eatin’ my tomatoes, turned out to be them green worms. Fat, ugly things they were.
- Maybe it’s them aphids, I heard tell of them. Tiny little things, you can barely see ’em, but they suck the life right outta your plants.
- Then there’s slugs, them slimy things. They come out at night, leavin’ trails all over the place. I stepped on one barefoot last summer, nearly jumped outta my skin.
- Could be caterpillars too. They munch on leaves like nobody’s business. Seen ’em on my roses before.
I went out there this mornin’, took a good look at them petunias. Didn’t see no worms, not like last year. But I did see somethin’ movin’ on the underside of a leaf. Tiny, real tiny. Might be them aphids, just like I thought. Or maybe somethin’ else entirely. Hard to say when you ain’t got good eyes no more.
I tried sprayin’ ’em with some soapy water, that’s what my neighbor told me to do. Said it gets rid of the bugs without killin’ the flowers. Hope she’s right. I ain’t got the money to go buyin’ all them fancy chemicals they sell at the store. Besides, I don’t like usin’ that stuff. Who knows what it does to the air, to the ground. Good old soap and water, that’s what I say.
If it ain’t the bugs, then I don’t know what it is. Maybe it’s the weather. We had some real hard rain last week, might’ve beat up the flowers a bit. Or maybe it’s just old age. Flowers get old, just like people. They start to fade, get all wrinkly, and then they die. That’s just the way of things, I guess. But still, it makes me sad to see ’em like this, all chewed up and holey.
I’ll keep an eye on ’em, see if the soapy water does the trick. If not, I guess I’ll have to try somethin’ else. Maybe sprinkle some coffee grounds around ’em, heard that keeps the slugs away. Or maybe I’ll just give up and plant somethin’ else next year. Somethin’ them bugs don’t like so much. Petunias are pretty, but they sure are a lot of trouble. Always somethin’ tryin’ to eat ’em or kill ’em. Makes a body tired, just thinkin’ about it. But I ain’t givin’ up just yet, these petunias mean a lot to me. They remind me of my mama, she loved these flowers, always had a bunch growin’ in her yard. So, I’ll keep fightin’ for ’em, even if it means war with a bunch of tiny bugs I can barely see.
And you know what else? I saw somethin’ else suspicious, some kinda shiny trails on the leaves. Could be snails, them things move slow but they sure can eat a lot. Or maybe it’s somethin’ entirely different, something I ain’t never seen before. This gardenin’ business, it’s more complicated than it looks. You gotta be a detective, a doctor, and a weather forecaster all rolled into one. And even then, sometimes you just can’t win.
Anyways, I’m gonna keep watchin’ them flowers, tryin’ different things. Maybe I’ll ask that young fella at the garden center for some advice. He seems to know a lot about plants. But I ain’t buyin’ no fancy stuff from him, just plain old advice, that’s all I need.
So that’s the story of my holey petunias. Wish me luck, folks. I got a feelin’ I’m gonna need it. This battle with whatever’s eatin’ my flowers ain’t over yet. But one thing’s for sure, I ain’t gonna let them little critters win. Not without a fight, anyway.
