Okay, here’s my blog post about planting marigolds with tomatoes, written in a casual, personal style:
So, I’ve been hearing a lot about companion planting lately. You know, the whole “plant this next to that” for better results. One classic combo that kept popping up was marigolds and tomatoes. Supposedly, marigolds repel some nasty bugs that like to munch on tomato plants.

I figured, why not give it a shot? My tomatoes got destroyed by something last year, so I’m up for anything that might help.
First, I got my hands on some marigold seeds. Went with the cheap kind from local store , nothing fancy.
I had already started my tomato seedlings indoors, they were about 4 inches tall, ready to be move to the garden.
The Planting Process
- I prepped my garden bed. Just the usual: pulled out any weeds, loosened up the soil, added some compost. My soil isn’t great, it’s a bit heavy, so I try to amend it every year.
- I use my hands and dig the soil to a depth of about 6 inches, and put tomato seedlings in it.
- Next, I planted the marigolds. I basically just sprinkled the seeds around the tomato plants. I didn’t go crazy measuring or anything, just made sure there was a decent scattering. I figured a few inches away from the tomato stems was good enough.
- Then, I gently watered everything in. I didn’t want to blast the little marigold seeds away, so I used a watering can with a rose head (that’s the thing with all the tiny holes).
And that’s pretty much it! I’m not expecting miracles, but I’m hoping the marigolds will at least help a little. It’s all about experimenting, right? It’s also add some color to garden.
I’ll keep you guys posted on how it goes. Maybe in a few weeks, I’ll have some gorgeous, bug-free tomatoes to show off. Fingers crossed!
