Now, let me tell you about them crepe myrtle roots, I’ve seen ‘em myself. They ain’t too deep, y’know. Most times, them roots grow just about 10 to 12 inches into the ground, like a shallow pit. They ain’t like them big old oak trees, with roots that dig down real deep. No, no, them crepe myrtles got roots that spread out more than they go down. Ain’t no taproot either, just them little fibrous ones that spread out and cover the area where the tree’s branches are. So, if you got one of them trees in your yard, don’t be expectin’ any deep root troubles, not really.
Them roots, well, they’re weak, but they’re dense. They’ll spread out around the area where the tree’s leaves reach. If you got a big tree, them roots might spread out about three times as wide as the tree’s canopy. Now, don’t go diggin’ up your garden right under that tree, cause them roots might make it harder to plant anything close. They’re not gonna go too deep, but they do take up space.
And, if you’re wonderin’ if them crepe myrtles can cause any problems with your foundation or walkways, well, they’re not too bad. As long as you keep ‘em a good 5 to 10 feet away from them things, you’ll be just fine. They ain’t like them other trees that’ll ruin your pavement or mess with your pipes. They just want their space, spreadin’ out their roots without botherin’ much.
Now, if you’re plantin’ one of these trees, you don’t gotta go deep down in the dirt. Just dig a hole three to four times as wide as the root ball. That’s about right. If you got a root ball that’s 2 to 3 feet wide, dig that hole about 6 to 12 feet wide. That way, them roots can spread out comfortably and get all the water and nutrients they need. Ain’t no need for all that fancy stuff, just give ‘em room to grow.
As for them roots goin’ down deep, you won’t see that happen. They don’t go more than a couple feet under the soil. The crepe myrtle’s roots, they’re not gonna go deep like them trees with big ol’ taproots. They stay shallow, just enough to soak up water and grab some nutrients from the top layers of soil. That’s all they need, and they’re happy with it.
So, to sum it all up, crepe myrtle roots, they ain’t deep. They stay mostly around 10 to 12 inches, and they spread out sideways a good bit. You don’t gotta worry much about them messin’ with your foundations or underground pipes, just keep ‘em a good distance away. They ain’t gonna cause no trouble, as long as you give ‘em enough room to spread their roots and grow nice and strong.
