Today, I want to talk about something that’s been on my mind: do peonies bloom after cutting? I’ve always loved peonies, their big, fluffy blooms are just so gorgeous. But I’ve also been a little hesitant to cut them for bouquets because I wasn’t sure if they’d keep blooming afterward.
So, I decided to do a little experiment. First, I went out to my garden and picked out a few peony stems that had buds that were just about to open. I made sure to cut the stems at an angle, which I heard helps them absorb water better. Then, I brought them inside and put them in a vase filled with fresh water. I also added a little bit of that flower food that you get at the grocery store, just to give them an extra boost.

- Day 1: The buds were still pretty tight, but I could see a little bit of color peeking through. I made sure to change the water in the vase and trim the stems a little bit.
- Day 2: The buds started to open up a bit more! I was so excited! It was amazing to see the transformation happening right before my eyes. I kept changing the water and making sure they had enough light.
- Day 3: Boom! They fully bloomed! The flowers were huge and fluffy, and they smelled amazing. I was so happy that my little experiment worked.
So, the answer to the question “do peonies bloom after cutting?” is a big YES! But it’s important to cut them at the right time, when the buds are just starting to show color, and to give them plenty of water and a little bit of flower food. I learned that cutting peonies doesn’t mean the end of their beauty, it just means you get to enjoy them in a different way. And that’s pretty cool, right?
Some extra observations
I noticed that the cut peonies didn’t last quite as long as the ones that were still on the plant, but they still lasted for a good few days. I also found that the ones in a cooler room lasted a bit longer than the ones in a warmer room. And, just like with any cut flowers, it’s important to keep them away from direct sunlight and drafts. It felt great to see them bloom, and I hope this might help others enjoy these pretty flowers, too!
