Well now, let’s talk about them redbud trees, the ones with the purdy pink flowers. Folks call ’em Eastern Redbuds, somethin’ like that. Fancy name, but a tree’s a tree, I always say. Now, you might be wonderin’, are these here trees bad for your dog? Heard some folks sayin’ this and that, so let’s get it straight.
Some say, yeah, they got this stuff called saponin, or maybe it’s mimosine, somethin’ like that. Sounds scary, right? They say it can make your dog sick, you know, throwin’ up and the runs. Nobody wants that for their furry friend, no sirree. But then, you hear other folks sayin’ they ain’t no problem at all. Confusin’, ain’t it?
I tell you what, I’ve had dogs all my life, runnin’ around the yard, chewin’ on everything they can get their paws on. And we got redbud trees, plenty of ’em. Never had a dog get sick from it, not once. Now, I ain’t sayin’ it can’t happen, but I ain’t seen it. And I’ve seen a lot, let me tell ya.
So, what’s the real story? Well, it seems like them big-shot animal doctors, the ones in the city, they say it ain’t on their list of bad plants. You know, the list they got for things that’ll really hurt your dog. They ain’t puttin’ the redbud on there. That’s gotta mean somethin’, right?
From what I gather, these redbud trees ain’t like them oleander bushes, the ones you hear about bein’ real poison. Redbuds, they ain’t like that. Maybe if your dog eats a whole pile of leaves or chews on the bark all day, maybe then he’ll get an upset stomach. But mostly, it seems like they’re pretty safe.
- Sap: Some say the sap is bad, but dogs ain’t usually lickin’ sap, are they? They’re chasin’ squirrels and diggin’ holes.
- Leaves: Yeah, they might chew on a leaf or two, but it ain’t like they’re eatin’ a whole salad.
- Bark: Maybe a puppy might try to chew on the bark, but grown dogs mostly leave it alone.
Now, I ain’t a vet, mind you. I’m just tellin’ you what I’ve seen and what I’ve heard. If you’re worried about your dog, you best talk to your vet. They know more than I do about this stuff. But if you ask me, I wouldn’t be losin’ no sleep over redbud trees. There’s worse things out there for your dog to get into, believe you me.
Like them chocolate bars you leave on the counter? Now that’s somethin’ to worry about! Or them little batteries, the ones they put in toys. Dogs swallow them things, and it’s real bad news. Redbud trees? They ain’t high on my list of worries, that’s for sure.
And let’s not forget them babies, the little human ones. They put everything in their mouths, don’t they? Well, it seems like the redbud tree is safe for them too. So you don’t have to worry about your grandbaby pickin’ up a flower and takin’ a bite. Goodness knows, they try to eat everything!
Now, these redbud trees, they ain’t perfect, mind you. They can be kinda brittle, the branches break off easy in the wind or snow. And they don’t live forever, specially if they’re stressed out. But they sure are pretty in the spring, all them pink flowers. Makes you feel good just lookin’ at ’em.
So, there you have it. My two cents on redbud trees and dogs. Take it for what it’s worth. I’m just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two. But if you ask me, them redbuds ain’t nothin’ to fret over. Just keep an eye on your dog, like you always should, and let him enjoy the yard. That’s what I say.
One more thing, folks like them “Eastern Redbud ‘Rising Sun’” they say that’s safe too. Just about any of them redbuds you see around here are probably alright. But like I said, if you’re worried, talk to the vet. They know best.
