Alright, listen up, y’all. You wanna grow them purdy mornin’ glories inside, huh? Well, it ain’t rocket science, but there’s a few things you gotta know. Don’t go thinkin’ you can just throw some seeds in a pot and they’ll magically turn into them beautiful flowers. Nah, it takes a little work, just like everything else in life.
First off, you gotta get yourself some seeds. Them little fellers are the start of it all. Now, them mornin’ glory seeds, they got a tough skin, like an old stubborn mule. You gotta soften ’em up a bit before they’ll sprout. Soak ’em in some water for a day or overnight. Just like you soak beans before you cook ’em, see? Same idea.
- Get yourself some good dirt, too. Don’t go diggin’ up no clay from the backyard. Get some of that fancy stuff from the store, the kind that says “potting mix” on the bag. Your little seedlings will thank you for it.
- And don’t go plantin’ ’em in no old coffee can, neither. Get yourself some decent pots, somethin’ with holes in the bottom so the water can drain out. Mornin’ glories, they don’t like their feet wet, just like me and my achin’ bunions.
Now, when to plant ’em? Well, you don’t wanna start too early, ’cause they’ll get all leggy and weak. And you don’t wanna start too late, neither, ’cause then you won’t get no flowers till the end of summer. They say about six weeks before you plan to put ’em outside is about right. So, if you wanna have ’em bloomin’ in, say, June, you gotta start ’em inside around April. Makes sense, right?
Plant them seeds about a half-inch deep, not too deep now. And water ’em good, but don’t drown ’em. Just keep the soil nice and moist, like a damp sponge. And put ’em in a warm place, where they can get some sunshine. A sunny windowsill is just perfect. If you ain’t got no sunny windowsill, well, then you might need to get yourself one of them grow lights. But ain’t nobody got time or money for that, so just find a sunny spot, ya hear?
Now, you gotta be patient. Them seeds, they ain’t gonna sprout overnight. It might take a week or two, even longer sometimes. Don’t go pokin’ around in the dirt, neither. Just leave ’em be and let ’em do their thing. And once they do sprout, you gotta keep ’em watered and give ’em plenty of light. Turn them pots every now and again so they don’t get all bendy on one side reachin’ for the sun, like a sunflower.
And when they get big enough, you gotta harden ’em off. That means you gotta get ’em used to the outside world before you plant ’em in the garden. Take ’em outside for a little bit each day, gradually increasing the time. Just like you wouldn’t go jumpin’ in a cold lake without dipping your toes in first, right? Same thing with these little plants.
And when it’s finally time to plant ’em outside, make sure you give ’em somethin’ to climb on. A fence, a trellis, even a string will do. Mornin’ glories, they love to climb, just like my grandson likes to climb trees. And once they start bloomin’, oh, you’ll be so happy you went to all this trouble. Them flowers are just the prettiest thing you ever did see, all purple and blue and pink, openin’ up in the mornin’ sun.
And don’t forget to water ’em regular, especially when it’s hot and dry. And you can give ’em a little somethin’ to eat, too, some of that plant food from the store. Just follow the directions on the package, don’t go overdoin’ it now. And if you want even more flowers, you gotta deadhead ’em. That means you gotta pinch off the old, dead flowers, so the plant will make new ones. It’s like prunin’ a rose bush, kinda.
So there you have it. That’s how you grow mornin’ glories from seed indoors. It ain’t hard, just takes a little time and patience and a little bit of know-how. Now go on and get plantin’! And you’ll have a beautiful garden full of mornin’ glories before you know it. You’ll be the envy of the whole neighborhood, I tell ya.
