Well, let me tell ya about waterin’ them Japan-y maples in the summer, when it’s hot as a pepper sprout.
See, when them little maple trees are just babies, you gotta water ’em more. Like a newborn calf, they need more feedin’. They ain’t got them big roots spread out yet, so they can’t reach down and find water all by themselves. You gotta be their mama and give ’em a good drink.
- If it’s real hot, like fryin’ an egg on the sidewalk hot, you might gotta water them little trees every day. Yup, every single day!
- Don’t just sprinkle a little water on top, you gotta soak that dirt good. Like when you’re washin’ clothes, you gotta get ’em soaked all through.
Now, when that maple tree gets bigger, it’s like a teenager. It starts gettin’ more independent. Them roots grow out and spread, like a chicken scratchin’ in the yard.
So, you don’t gotta water it as much. Maybe every few days, dependin’ on the weather. If it’s rainin’, well then the good Lord’s doin’ the waterin’ for ya, ain’t He? You can just sit on the porch and watch it grow.
But if it’s dry as a bone, you gotta give that tree a drink. Stick your finger in the dirt, see if it’s dry down deep. If it is, time for water. Don’t be stingy with it, give it a good long drink.
And if you got that maple tree in a pot, well, that’s a whole different story. Pots dry out faster than the ground. So you gotta water them pot-bound trees more often. Maybe even every day in the hot summer, like I said before.
Now, some folks say you gotta water in the mornin’. Some say evenin’ is better. Me? I say, just water when you can. Long as you water it, the tree don’t care what time of day it is.
And don’t forget to put some mulch around that tree. You know, like straw or leaves or somethin’. That helps keep the dirt from dryin’ out so fast. It’s like puttin’ a blanket on the ground, keeps it cool and moist.
So, there you have it. Water them baby trees more, water them big trees less. Water them pot trees more than the ones in the ground. And don’t forget the mulch. It ain’t rocket science, just common sense. Keep an eye on them trees, they’ll tell ya when they’re thirsty.
Just remember, water is life, for us and for them trees. Take care of them, and they’ll give you pretty leaves to look at all summer long.
