Oh dear, them little chipmunks sure can be a handful, can’t they? You plant your pretty flowers, and next thing you know, them pesky critters are scurrying ’round, digging up your pots like they own the place! But don’t you worry none, ’cause I’ve got some old-fashioned ways that’ll keep ’em out of your flower pots, and they ain’t all that complicated, neither.
First thing you gotta do is think about a good old physical barrier. Now, I’m not talking about building some big fancy fence, no ma’am. What you need is something simple like some chicken wire or a mesh netting. Just wrap it around the pot, making sure there’s enough space so them chipmunks can’t get in there to dig around. They’re quick, but they ain’t gonna dig through wire too easy. It’s like putting a little wall ’round your flowers that they just can’t get past.
Now, another thing them chipmunks don’t like is a good smell. You know how some folks can’t stand the smell of garlic or strong onions? Well, turns out chipmunks feel the same way! You can mix up your own little DIY repellent right at home with stuff you probably got in your kitchen already. Get yourself some peppermint oil, or maybe a little cinnamon or garlic powder. Mix a few drops of the oil with some water in a spray bottle, and then just spray it around the edge of your pots. That’ll make them little critters scram faster than a fox in a henhouse!
Speaking of smells, citrus is another one they can’t stand. You can take the peel of an orange or lemon, chop it up a bit, and toss it around your flower pots. They don’t like the sharp tang of it, and it works real good to keep ’em away. If you’re feeling extra crafty, you could even make a little citrus sachet and hang it around your garden. The smell’ll drive them chipmunks to find a new place to play.
And don’t forget, them chipmunks are real skittish creatures. They like to hide and stay outta sight, always scurrying between their little burrows and bushes. So, if you make your flower pots a bit less inviting by putting some big ol’ rocks or stones around the edges, that’ll discourage ’em. You see, they don’t like wide-open spaces; they prefer the safety of hiding places. So if your pots are surrounded by rocks, they might just decide to look for easier digs somewhere else.
Vinegar is another smell that can keep those little chipmunks away. You can make yourself a simple vinegar solution by mixing water and vinegar in a spray bottle. Once that’s all mixed up, give the base of your pots a good spritz. The sourness of the vinegar might make your flowers smell a little funny, but it’ll sure make them chipmunks want to move on down the road.
Also, if you’re willing to spend a little bit more time on it, you can make a homemade chili pepper spray. Just get yourself some cayenne pepper, mix it with some water, and add a few drops of dish soap to make it stick. Shake it up real good, and then spray it around your pots. Chipmunks hate the spicy burn, and they ain’t gonna stick around once they get a whiff of it. Just be careful, ’cause that stuff can burn your eyes too if you’re not careful, so keep it away from your face!
Lastly, if you’re not too squeamish, you can always try predator urine—now, don’t go runnin’ off scared, I’m talkin’ about something like coyote or fox urine. It sounds funny, but animals like chipmunks get mighty nervous around the scent of predators. You can buy this stuff at the garden center or online, and just sprinkle it around your pots. They’ll smell it, and trust me, they’ll be outta there quicker than you can say “chipmunk stew!”
Well, there you go, darlin’. Just a few simple tricks to keep your flowers safe and sound from them little critters. You don’t gotta go spendin’ a fortune on fancy products—nature’s got all the answers. All you need is a little patience and some of that good ol’ country know-how. Good luck, and happy gardening!
