Impatiens Seed Germination: How Long Should You Wait?

Impatiens Seed Germination: How Long Should You Wait?

Well, let me tell ya, them impatiens seeds, they don’t just pop up overnight, you know? Takes a bit of time, patience, and care to get them lil’ seeds to sprout. Now, from what I’ve heard, impatiens usually take about 14 to 21 days to germinate. That’s like two to three weeks, give or take. But here’s the thing, you can’t just plant them and walk away, no sir! You gotta keep them warm and comfy, or else they might not come up at all.

First off, ya need to make sure the soil is nice and warm, around 75°F, or them seeds might just sit there and rot in the dirt. Don’t want that now, do ya? You can start ’em inside, where it’s easier to control the heat, and maybe cover ’em up with some plastic or glass. Once them lil’ guys start pokin’ through the soil, take off that cover, let ’em breathe. Fresh air does ’em good.

Now, after they’ve sprouted, you don’t wanna rush things. Give ’em about 7 to 10 days after germination before you move them into bigger pots or whatever containers you’ve got handy. You can use them plastic cell packs, peat pots, or just any ol’ container, as long as it’s got good drainage. Don’t wanna drown ’em!

And oh, don’t forget, impatiens love the light, but not too much! They’re kinda picky like that. They like a nice spot with some filtered sunlight, maybe a couple hours in the morning or evening. If ya stick ’em in full sun, they might not do so well. Too much heat, and they get all droopy and sad. Better off keeping ’em in the shade most of the day, especially when it’s real hot outside.

If you’re in one of them warm areas, like USDA zones 9 to 11, you can plant ’em right in the ground after the last frost. Lucky you! But most folks, like us, we gotta start ’em indoors, keep ’em happy and healthy before we put ’em outside. It’s all about timing, ya see? Gotta get ’em ready so when the weather’s right, they can start flowering. They say it takes about 115 days from the time you plant the seeds till you see
