Okay, so, I’ve got these beautiful rose bushes in my yard, right? And for the longest time, they were doing great, blooming like crazy. But then, ugh, I started noticing these shiny, metallic-looking beetles all over them. I mean, all over them.
At first, I was like, “Oh, a few bugs, no big deal.” I tried to just, you know, pick them off by hand. Big mistake. It was like trying to bail out the ocean with a teacup. There were just too many!

My Battle Against the Beetles
I started to get really frustrated. I looked closer and realized they weren’t just on the roses, they were eating them! Leaving these ugly, skeletonized leaves and chewed-up flowers. It was heartbreaking!
So, I did what anyone would do, I Googled it. Turns out, these little monsters are called Japanese Beetles. Apparently, they’re a real problem for gardeners.
My first plan of attack was to use soapy water. I had read somewhere that it worked.
- I got a bucket.
- Filled it with water.
- Squirted in some dish soap.
- Then I went around, knocking the beetles off the roses into the bucket.
It felt good at first, like I was really doing something. But honestly, it was a never-ending battle. I’d clear one bush, and by the time I got to the next, the first one would be covered again. They were also falling into the water, and still surviving.
Next, I tried some neem oil spray I had. Sprayed it everywhere, I mean, doused those plants. It smelled kinda weird, but I was desperate. It helped a little, I think, but it definitely didn’t solve the problem. I still have those beetles, but I am still finding new way to deal with them.
I’m still figuring this whole thing out. It’s a learning process, for sure. Maybe I’ll have to try some of those beetle traps next. Gardening is definitely not for the faint of heart!
