Okay, here is my sharing about Lavatera assurgentiflora, the island mallow:
So, I’ve been messing around with plants again, this time it’s the island mallow, or as the eggheads call it, Lavatera assurgentiflora. Sounds fancy, huh? Well, it’s a pretty neat plant, I gotta say. I heard it used to be called Malva assurgentiflora or something, and some people even call it mission mallow, royal mallow, or malva rosa island mallow. Whatever its name is, it’s cool.
First off, I got my hands on some seeds. I mean, where else do you start, right? Then, I planted them in some pots I had lying around. Nothing special, just regular potting soil. I watered them, not too much, just enough to keep the soil damp. I also made sure to replenish this plant’s nutrients regularly.
The waiting game began. I checked on them every day, like an overbearing parent. And guess what? They started to sprout! Little green shoots popping up. I was stoked! I also heard it grows really fast, so I’m excited about that.
- From there, it was all about keeping them happy.
- They seem to like a lot of sun, so I moved the pots to the sunniest spot in my yard.
- I also made sure they had enough water, but not too much.
They just grew and grew. I mean, these things get big. Some people call them tree mallows for a reason. Mine is still a baby, but I can see it getting there. The leaves are kinda fuzzy, and the flowers, oh man, the flowers are a trip. They’re like a bright pinkish-purple. I’ve heard it’s also called malva rosa, which means pink mallow in Spanish. I think the flowers have this striking, tropical look, quite a sight.
I’ve read that there’s even a kind called Lavatera assurgentiflora ssp. glabra. I guess it’s a type of this plant. Mine isn’t that kind, I don’t think. But who knows, maybe I’ll try to grow that one next.
Anyway, that’s my little adventure with the island mallow so far. It’s been a blast watching it grow. If you’re looking for something cool and easy to grow, give it a shot. Just don’t come crying to me if it takes over your yard! You can go find some database for this plant, and it might be labeled as Lavatera Assurgentiflora Island Mallow.
