You know, there’s this tree, it ain’t too big, but it got them pretty little white flowers on it. Oh, you see it all over in the spring, just bursting with them clusters of small white blooms. Ain’t it something when you walk by and it’s like the whole tree just covered in these tiny white flowers? Just makes ya stop and stare for a bit, don’t it? These trees, they ain’t hard to find neither, pop up everywhere. Some folks even got ’em right in their yards, like it’s some kinda fancy thing, but really, they just like a nice spot in the sun.
Now, some of these trees, like that American mountain-ash, they don’t grow too tall, maybe around 10 metres if they really stretch. They’re spreadin’ across places like Ontario, way down south from Hudson Bay. Got leaves on ’em with 13 to 17 little leaflets, each about 5 to 10 centimetres long. The edges of them leaves are all jagged like, kinda like a saw. But the real show comes in May or June when they just explode with these clusters of small white flowers. It’s like the whole tree lights up, real pretty sight.
And if you look around towns, you might catch a Callery pear tree, them ones you see along streets or in people’s gardens. They’re prized, as they say, for them showy white flowers. When spring rolls around, these trees don’t hold back, they just cover themselves in white like they’re ready for some kinda big fancy event. Ain’t nothing subtle about it, these flowers come in bunches, and they want to be noticed. Folks love ’em for it too, makes their homes look real nice come springtime.
Then there’s other trees, like that Shogetsu Cherry. Now, this one’s a bit different, it’s from Japan. You won’t see it blooming till later in the season, but when it does, oh boy, those flowers are something special. They’re bigger than them little ones you see on other trees, and the tree itself, well, it’s more of a head-turner, you know what I mean?
If you wander around the countryside or some gardens, you might also spot an American Elderberry. It ain’t just pretty to look at, it’s got its own thing goin’ on. It can grow in all sorts of places, from USDA growing zones 3 to 9, and it’s real adaptable like that. The elderberry flowers, they’re small and white too, and the whole tree just gets covered in ‘em when the time’s right. And later, it gives you berries, which is something the birds sure love, and some folks even make jams or syrups out of ‘em.
One thing’s for sure, there’s plenty of trees with small white flowers out there. It don’t matter where you are, whether you’re up in the colder areas or down where it’s warmer, these trees got a way of making themselves known. They’re not just for show either, many of ’em provide something back to the land or to the critters that live nearby. So next time you’re walking around and see one of these trees, covered in them little white flowers, take a second to appreciate it. They don’t last forever, but when they’re blooming, it’s like they’re giving you a little gift from nature.
