Alright, so you got them impatiens, right? Them pretty little flowers, all colorful and whatnot. But sometimes, they get all…leggy. You know, like long and skinny, not bushy and pretty like they should be. Don’t you worry none, I’ll tell ya what to do. It ain’t rocket science, that’s for sure.
First off, what does “leggy” even mean? Well, it’s like this: them stems, they start stretching out, reaching for the sun, I guess. But they get all thin and weak, and they don’t have many leaves. Looks kinda sad, like a plucked chicken, you know? It ain’t pretty, that’s for sure. So you see stems gettin’ all long and stretchy, with not so many leaves, that’s when you gotta do somethin’.
Now, why do they get leggy? Lots of reasons, really. Maybe they ain’t gettin’ enough sun. Yeah, they like shade, but they still need some light, you know? Not too much, not too little. Just right, like Goldilocks and her porridge. Or maybe you planted ‘em too close together. They need their space, just like us folks. Can’t be breathin’ down each other’s necks all the time. Or, maybe, and this is a big one, you ain’t been pinching them back.
Pinching? What’s that? Well, it’s like this: you see them flowers that are done bloomin’, all dried up and sad lookin’? You just take your fingers and pinch ’em off. Right where the stem meets the flower. Easy peasy. And don’t be shy about it. Pinch them flowers and a little bit of the stem below it, too. This makes the plant bush out, get all full and pretty. If you don’t pinch ’em, they just keep growin’ up and up, gettin’ all leggy. And no one wants that.
- Not enough sun
- Planted too close
- Not pinching back
So, what do you do if they’re already leggy? Don’t you fret, it ain’t the end of the world. You can fix it. You just gotta give ’em a good haircut. Yup, a haircut. Get yourself some clippers or some scissors, whatever you got. And just start snippin’. Don’t be scared, they’ll grow back, I promise you. Cut them stems back, maybe a third of the way, maybe half. Depends on how leggy they are. Just don’t cut them all the way down to nothin’! You wanna leave some leaves so they can still get energy from the sun, right? Common sense, really.
Now, after you give ’em a haircut, you gotta take care of ’em. Water ’em good, but don’t drown ‘em. And give ’em some food, too. You know, fertilizer. You can get that stuff at the store, any store that sells garden stuff. Just follow the directions on the package. Don’t go crazy with it, or you’ll burn ‘em up. And make sure they’re getting enough sun, but not too much. Remember what I said about Goldilocks? Just right.
And keep pinching ’em back, too. After they grow a bit, pinch ’em again. And again. Keep doin’ it all summer long, and they’ll stay nice and bushy and pretty. You’ll have the prettiest impatiens on the block, I tell ya. And folks will be askin’ you how you do it, and you can just smile and say, “Oh, it ain’t nothin’. Just a little bit of know-how.”
One more thing. Sometimes them impatiens just get old and tired. Even if you do everything right, they just don’t look good no more. It happens. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Just pull ‘em out and plant some new ones. It’s the circle of life, you know? Things grow, things die, things grow again. That’s just how it is. But with a little bit of care, them impatiens will give you pretty flowers all summer long. And who doesn’t like pretty flowers? Makes you feel good just lookin’ at ’em.
So there ya have it. That’s how you deal with leggy impatiens. Not so hard, is it? Now go on out there and get your hands dirty. And don’t forget to pinch ’em back!
