Okay, so my favorite potted plant was looking a little sad. The soil level had sunk down, and I could see some of the roots peeking out. Time to top it up! Here’s how I did it, step-by-step, and it worked like a charm.
Gathering My Stuff
First, I got everything I needed together. No one likes running around mid-project, right?

- New potting soil: Made sure it was the same kind I used before.
- A small trowel or spoon: For scooping the soil. Could even use your hands.
- A watering can: Gotta give the plant a drink afterward!
- Gloves:Optional, I just don’t really like the feel of the soil.
Prepping the Plant
I gently poked around the existing soil with my finger. This helps loosen things up a bit and makes it easier to add the new soil. If I feel any super compacted areas, I gave them a little extra attention, just to break them up.
Adding the New Soil
Then I used a trowel to scoop up some of the new potting mix. And sprinkled the new soil around the base of the plant, little by little. I carefully filled in the gaps, making sure not to pile it up too high against the stem. Main thing is just covering those exposed roots and bringing the soil level back up to where it should be.
Settling Things In
I pressed down very, very gently on the new soil, just to settle it in and get rid of any big air pockets. Used my fingers for this ’cause it gives better control.
Watering Time!
Grabbed my watering can and gave the plant a good, slow drink. I watched until water started to come out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. That means the water has reached all the way down, which is good.
The Finishing Touches
I kept an eye on my plants and make sure the soil is moist.
And that’s it! My plant looks much happier now, and I’m happy too. It’s such a simple thing, but it makes a big difference. Super easy, and my plant is thriving!
