Alright, alright, let’s talk about these darn petunias, yeah? You know, the pretty flowers I planted, the ones that are supposed to make my yard look nice? Well, somethin’s been eatin’ ’em, makin’ holes all over the place, and I ain’t happy ’bout it one bit.
I went out there this mornin’, coffee in hand, ready to admire my hard work, and what did I see? Holes! Big ones, small ones, all over them pretty petals. It’s a mess, I tell ya, a real mess. Makes me wanna just yank them all out and be done with it.
Now, I ain’t no fancy gardener, you hear? I just stick ’em in the ground and hope for the best. But even I know somethin’ ain’t right when my flowers look like somethin’ took a bite outta them. So I started pokin’ around, tryin’ to figure out what’s goin’ on.
- First thing I thought was, maybe it’s them slugs. Slimy little critters, always sneakin’ around at night, munchin’ on everything. I’ve seen ’em before, leavin’ trails all over the place.
- Then I thought, maybe it’s them earwigs. Nasty lookin’ things, with them pinchers on their butts. They like to hide in dark places, and I reckon petunias offer plenty of hidin’ spots.
But then I got to talkin’ to my neighbor, Mrs. Johnson, down the street. She knows a thing or two about gardenin’, always fussin’ over her roses and such. She told me it could be them tobacco budworms. Never heard of ’em before, but apparently, they love eatin’ petunias. Little green caterpillars, she said, real sneaky.
She said these budworms, sometimes they call ’em geranium budworms or petunia budworms too, they’re moth caterpillars, you know? And they eat a lot, and they eat fast. Said they can make a real mess of your petunias in no time. She even said they ate her roses once! Can you believe it? Roses! Them budworms, they ain’t got no respect, I tell ya.
Mrs. Johnson said I gotta treat them petunias with something called “BT”. Said it’s cheap and only kills the caterpillars, doesn’t hurt the flowers. Guess I gotta go down to the store and get some of that stuff. Can’t have them worms eatin’ up all my hard work, no sir.
She also mentioned somethin’ about “horticultural oil”. Said it’s good for killin’ other bugs that might be botherin’ the petunias, like aphids and mites and such. I don’t know, sounds kinda fancy to me. Maybe I’ll try the BT first and see how that goes.
And you know what else? Them critters from the woods, like squirrels and rabbits and such, they might be nibblin’ on my petunias too. Always lookin’ for a quick meal, them rascals. Can’t really blame ’em, I guess, but still, stay outta my flowers!
So, what do I do? Well, I guess I gotta try a little bit of everything. Gotta get rid of them budworms, that’s for sure. And maybe put up some kind of fence to keep the critters out. And maybe even try that fancy oil stuff Mrs. Johnson was talkin’ about. It’s a lot of work, I tell ya, just to have some pretty flowers. But I ain’t givin’ up yet. I’m gonna fight for my petunias!
And one last thing Mrs. Johnson told me – petunias can grow back even after they’ve been eaten. So, even if them budworms did a number on my flowers, there’s still hope! That’s good news, I tell ya. Gives me somethin’ to look forward to.
So, if you seein’ holes in your petunias, don’t just stand there scratchin’ your head. Go out there and find out what’s causin’ the trouble! It could be budworms, could be slugs, could be critters. Whatever it is, you gotta take care of it, or you won’t have no flowers left. And nobody wants that, right? We all want pretty flowers to look at, especially in the summer. So go on, get out there and protect your petunias! You hear me?
