Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into growing figs, right? And I stumbled upon this variety called “Violette de Bordeaux.” Sounds fancy, huh? I started digging around, trying to find a place where I could actually buy one of these trees.
First, I learned that this fig is also known as “Negronne.” I guess it’s got a couple of names.

Anyway, I went on this whole hunt, looking for a Violette de Bordeaux fig tree. Finally, I found a place that was selling them. When I got the tree, it was just a little guy, maybe a couple of feet tall.
I found out that they do well in containers, so that’s what I did. I got this big pot, filled it with some decent potting mix, and plopped the little fig tree in there. I made sure the pot had holes at the bottom for good drainage. They say that it will be 6 to 10 feet tall, and 6 feet wide. I will be happy if my fig tree can grow up like that.
Next, I had to figure out where to put this thing. I read that fig trees love the sun, like, they really love it. They need at least 6 to 8 hours a day. I found this spot on my patio that gets blasted with sunlight almost all day long. Seemed perfect.
I also found out that these trees are self-pollinating, so I didn’t need to buy another one for it to make fruit. I was reading that in warm places, you can get two harvests in a year, one in the early summer and one in the fall. That sounded pretty sweet, so I was hoping for that.
I read that some people consider the Black Madeira fig to be the best tasting one, so maybe I’ll try to grow that one later. But for now, I was set on this Violette de Bordeaux.
I watered it regularly, making sure the soil didn’t dry out completely. I also gave it some fertilizer every now and then, just to give it a little boost.
I have to say it’s cool to know that I can get fruit from just one tree. I’m not sure if I’ll get two harvests since I’m not in the warmest climate, but even one would be awesome. I read that the Violette de Bordeaux is a dwarf tree, which is good for my patio.
So yeah, that’s my story of getting a Violette de Bordeaux fig tree. It’s been a fun little project. Now, I just gotta wait and see if I actually get some figs! Hopefully, it won’t take too long, I’m kinda excited about it. I’ll keep you guys updated if anything cool happens.
