Well, bless your heart, let’s talk about waterin’ them blueberry plants. Folks say it ain’t as simple as just throwin’ water on ’em whenever you feel like it. There’s a right way and a wrong way, just like with most things in life.
First off, them young’uns, the ones you just planted, they’re kinda like babies. They need more water than the older ones. For the first coupla years, they say you gotta give ’em 1 to 2 inches of water a week. Now, how you gonna measure that? I dunno, stick a ruler in the ground, maybe? Just make sure the dirt’s good and wet, but not soakin’ wet, ya know?
After them first two years, they get a bit tougher. If the good Lord sends down a good rain, about an inch every 10 days or so, you might not have to do much waterin’ at all. But if it’s dry as a bone out there, you gotta help ’em out. Give ’em a good soakin’, deep down into the roots. Don’t just sprinkle the top, that ain’t gonna do nothin’ but waste water.
- If them leaves start lookin’ brown and crispy around the edges, that means they’re thirsty. Give ’em a drink! But sometimes that can look like when you spray ’em with that bug killer stuff, so you gotta pay attention.
- And don’t go drownin’ ’em neither! Blueberries, they like their feet wet, but they don’t like standin’ in water. Their roots are real shallow, like a baby’s breath, and if they sit in water too long, they’ll rot. Then you ain’t gonna get no berries at all.
Some folks say water ’em two or three times a week if they’re in the ground or in them raised-up beds. If you got ’em in a pot, well, you might have to water ’em every day, especially when it’s hot. It all depends on how hot it is and how much rain you get. Just gotta use your common sense.
Now, some folks use that fancy drip irrigation stuff. Little pipes that drip water right where it needs to go. That’s probably the best way to do it, I reckon. Keeps the leaves dry and gets the water right to the roots. But if you ain’t got that, just use a hose or a waterin’ can. Just make sure you do it slow and steady, so the water soaks in and don’t just run off.
And remember, every week, that’s what they say. Rain or shine, you gotta make sure them blueberries get their water. Especially when they’re growin’ big and strong, gettin’ ready to give you them sweet berries. That’s when they need it the most.
So, that’s about all I know about waterin’ blueberries. It ain’t rocket science, just gotta pay attention to what them plants are tellin’ you. If they look dry, water ’em. If they look too wet, hold off. And if you get a good rain, well, thank the good Lord and take a break. You deserve it.
Just keep an eye on them leaves though! That browning thing, it can be tricky. Sometimes it’s the water, sometimes it ain’t. But if you keep ’em watered regular, you’ll probably be alright.
And one more thing, don’t be stingy with the water. Give ’em a good drink, let it soak down deep. Them blueberries will thank you for it, come harvest time.
There ya have it. Happy waterin’!
