What Are the Black Spots on My Maple Tree Leaves and How to Treat Them?

Now, them spots show up late in the season, usually when the summer’s almost done. The tree itself don’t suffer much from it, but the leaves look like they’ve seen better days. The fungus makes these black tar-like spots, and that’s how you know your tree’s got it.

How do we deal with these black spots?

Well, here’s the thing. You don’t really need to go crazy tryin’ to save your tree from this. The easiest way is just cleanin’ up them leaves that fall. Rakin’ them up and tossin’ ‘em out stops the fungus from stickin’ around. Sure, rakin’ ain’t the most fun job, but it works, and you don’t need any fancy tools, just a good ol’ rake.

But what if I don’t wanna rake?

Now, some folks might not be too keen on rakin’, and that’s fine. You can always go and get yourself some fungicide. There’s a bunch of brands out there, like Daconil fungicide, that’ll do the trick. Sprayin’ that on early, when the leaves just start buddin’, helps keep that fungus from showin’ up. You gotta do it a few times, about every week or so, until it ain’t spreadin’ no more.

What if my tree’s too tall to spray?

Well, once your tree gets big enough, sprayin’ becomes a hassle. But don’t worry, by then your tree’s strong enough to handle things on its own. You ain’t gotta fuss over it much. The black spots might show up, but they ain’t gonna cause too much harm to a big ol’ tree.

Can I do anything else to help my tree?

Well, yeah, sure. Mulchin’ helps a lot too. You just lay a good layer of mulch around the base of your tree. That keeps the soil all moist and happy, and your tree’s gonna appreciate that. Healthy soil means a healthier tree.

Will these spots come back every year?

Well, let me tell ya, once them black spots show up, they tend to come back every year if you ain’t careful. That’s why it’s important to keep up with that leaf rakin’ and tossin’ ‘em out, so you don’t give that fungus a chance to come back.

So, should I be worried?

Nah, don’t worry yourself sick over it. Sure, them black spots ain’t pretty, but they ain’t the end of the world for your tree neither. Just keep things clean, rake up them leaves, maybe spray a bit if you want, and your tree will be just fine.

In conclusion

Black spots on your maple tree leaves are a pain, but it ain’t somethin’ you should panic over. It’s just a fungus that shows up in late summer, and while it makes the leaves look rough, it ain’t gonna kill your tree. Rakin’ them leaves and maybe sprayin’ some fungicide can help keep it in check. And don’t forget, mulch always helps your tree stay strong. So, keep an eye on your tree, take care of it, and it’ll keep growin’ strong for years to come.
