Eh, them balloon flower seedlings, they be tiny things. If you ain’t never seen ’em, let me tell ya, they don’t look like much at first. Just lil’ green sprouts, real small and skinny, but don’t let that fool ya. They start from these seeds, see, them seeds lookin’ kinda like tiny brown rice, but even smaller. When you put ’em in the dirt, you don’t need to bury ’em too deep, just ’bout a quarter of an inch. Spread ’em out a bit too, about 8 to 12 inches apart, so they ain’t too crowded, ’cause plants don’t like to be cramped up, no sir.
Now, the soil, that’s gotta drain well. Ya don’t want no water just sittin’ there, no plant likes soggy feet, that’s what I always say. Water ’em nice and light, not too much, but ya gotta do it regular. They take their time to wake up, ’bout 9 to 14 days before ya see them lil’ sprouts peekin’ out. Be patient now, don’t be diggin’ ’em up too soon to check, they need their time.
Once them seedlings pop up, they’ll start growin’ slow, but steady. Ya won’t see no big ol’ blooms right away, nope. These balloon flowers, they don’t like to be rushed. They might not even give ya flowers in the first year, but come the second year, they’ll show off real pretty. Big ol’ purple, blue, or white blooms, like lil’ balloons puffin’ out. And they come back every year, so once ya got ’em goin’, they’ll be there for ya, just gotta give ’em a lil’ care now and again.
One thing though, these balloon flowers, they ain’t ones to spread too wild. They’ll drop their seeds and make more, but it ain’t like they’re takin’ over the whole yard. Just a nice lil’ patch here and there. If you leave ’em be, they’ll self-sow, but don’t worry, they ain’t gonna be a problem.
So, how do you grow balloon flowers from seedlings?
- First, ya gotta wait till the frost is gone in the spring. Balloon flowers don’t like the cold, nope.
- Then, plant the seeds shallow in well-drainin’ soil, not more than 1/4 inch deep.
- Give ’em space, 8 to 12 inches between each one, so they got room to grow.
- Water ’em lightly but often, till they sprout in about 9 to 14 days.
- Be patient ’cause these babies might not bloom until their second year, but once they do, they’ll come back every year without much fuss.
So, if you’re lookin’ to start growin’ balloon flowers, just remember, it takes a bit of time, but once they get goin’, they’re tough little things. They don’t need much, just good soil, waterin’ now and again, and a bit of space to stretch their roots. Once they bloom, you’ll be glad ya planted ’em, ’cause those flowers are somethin’ to see, like lil’ balloons floatin’ in the breeze.
