Christmas Tree Already Decorated but Not Drinking Water? Here’s What to Do

Now, let me tell ya, we already got the tree all set up, decorations and all. But the tree, well, it ain’t drinkin’ water no more. At first, I thought maybe it was takin’ a bit, but nope, it’s just sittin’ there all dry-like. And you know, once you got all them decorations up, it’s a pain to deal with any problems, ain’t it?

See, when you cut a tree down, it’s like pickin’ a flower, right? It’s gonna need water if you want it to stay fresh. If it stops drinkin’, sometimes you gotta do somethin’ ’bout that. First thing folks say is cut another inch off the bottom, but who’s got time to be takin’ the tree down again after it’s all done up? Not me, I’ll tell ya that. Instead, some folks talk ’bout drillin’ a few shallow holes in the bottom. That’s supposed to help it drink more water, especially if you don’t wanna be messin’ with takin’ down the whole tree again.

Christmas Tree Already Decorated but Not Drinking Water? Here’s What to Do

But lemme tell ya, don’t be puttin’ the tree too close to the heater or the fireplace! Heat’s bad for the tree. Even worse if it’s right by a window where the sun comes in all day long. That’s just gonna dry it out faster. Best thing is to keep it in a cooler spot, away from heat, ’cause Christmas trees don’t like gettin’ too warm. Humidity, though, that they like! You can put a pot of hot water on the stove, let it steam up the place, and maybe that’ll help the tree a bit. I know it sounds odd, but sometimes it works.

Now, another thing could be the type of tree. Some trees, they just don’t drink as much as others, or maybe this one’s a bit older than it should be, but how can you really know? You just grab the one that looks good at the lot and hope it lasts. But if it ain’t drinkin’ water, it’s probably dryin’ out from one of these reasons. You might have heard some folks say their grandpa used to drill big holes in the trunk, but I don’t think that’s right. I heard too that it doesn’t help much, and it could even hurt the tree. So, I’d say, don’t go makin’ big holes unless you wanna end up with more problems than ya started with.

  • Make sure the tree is cut fresh at the bottom before you set it up.
  • Keep it away from heat sources, like the heater or direct sunlight.
  • Try to keep the room humid, but not too hot.
  • If the tree ain’t drinkin’, drill some small holes in the base, but don’t go overboard with it.

At the end of the day, sometimes ya just gotta work with what you got. Trees don’t always act the way we want ’em to. But if you keep it watered and away from heat, it should last through Christmas. And if not, well, you’ll have to sweep up the needles a bit more often, I guess.
